It is Memorial Day. . . . . .I have greeted the morning with a reverent silence.
. . . .I think of him. The one who still stands at attention when he hears our national anthem play . . .his aged body crooked beneath him somehow manages to straighten itself under his devoted determination. The heart of a faithful young soldier still dwells within him. It catches my breath because in that moment I realize he was willing to die for me . . .he was willing to die for you.

. . . . and then I think of the one who did . . .I had met him briefly . . .at the back of a church . . .on a day of promise . . . he was twirling his new bride . . .and for a moment brief . . . all seemed like a sweet forever. He returned to her as he had promised . . .draped in our flag . . . honoring the vows spoken to her . . . honoring the vows spoken for us. His eternal sacrifice scripted into the freedom that I now know . . .

So, I choose to remember.
To pause . . .
To be still . . .
To be grateful . . . .
To be reverent . . . . .
And I speak their names aloud so never to forget all those who believed in something far greater than their own breath drawn.
Who let go of the hands they loved so I can have the freedom I know . . .
(And I remember!)

Room in the Inn

This Christmas I’ve been thinking so much about how simply Jesus came. I love that he came as a baby and I love that everything about his birth was both supernatural and natural, all at once. Completely heavenly—but still complete with labor pains and the stench of farm animals all around. How cold it must have been. I think about how far Mary and Joseph traveled: the rugged conditions of camel-back or horse-back or donkey-back. And to think: no one—save Heaven—knew or expected such a common night to be the night that would change the world forever.

I think about how long a journey Mary and Joseph must have traveled; I think about the monotony of traveling for a census. Traveling so far, having your water break—and then not having a place to stay!

I can see Mary: “Joseph! Take this exit—that motel might be open.” But, one after another, no one had space for this common couple.

I love that the Lord planned it this way. There was no space in the nice hotels. There were no rooms to let.

It is my heart’s desire to let there be space in this inn—this inn that is my heart—for Jesus to come and be born again. He is all about life, life, life—new life and new births. He always has a new birth for us. He makes all things new. He came to restore, to fight for what has been lost. All of our most valuable possessions: our hearts. Our families. Our abundant lives of peace and of joy, and a deep understanding of his love.

Sometimes I get so busy and I get distracted by the fancy hotels that I forget to leave him space to be born again in me. I tell him, “There is no room in this inn.”

He will be born in the lowly place, in the broken place (that can also be a little stinky). He understands that our hearts are sometimes not suitable places for his royalty to be born—and yet, he chose it this way, and he desires for us to welcome him in to be born again. He is not scared of our mangers nor our broken places.

King Jesus, baby Jesus, we welcome you. There is space here for you. Please be born here, in our lowly places. We are humbled that you came for us and that you still come for us. You always rescue our hearts, and we trust you.

Friends and family, we wish you a very merry Christmas. We pray that the peace of heaven would fill your homes and hearts. And most of all, we pray that there would be space in your inns for Him.

She left without saying goodbye. We looked up . . . .and she was simply gone.
Everything exists within a single moment. The chance to tell someone you love them, that they made your world different or better just because they included you in their own. In a moment, we can love madly . . .keep a promise, save a secret . . . let someone know that you are there when their world gets to weary to hold up all on their own. We can simply say . . . .loving you has made me better, please don’t ever forget.

Always remember . . .that miracles exist in a single moment. Make sure you tell someone . . . .they matter.

Papas, we honor you

I was born at 4:33 am. I am honored to say that I am the 3rd daughter to Al Bowden.

My greatest memory of my father is that every morning at 6:30 am, when I would get up to get ready for the day, I would look down a long hall to see him . . . sitting there in the same position he was the morning before, gray flannel robe, elbows on the table, head bowed over his Bible . . . .praying for his children. I am never quite sure I understood it then. But I do now. His prayers for his family have been timeless. They have kept us, protected us, provided for us, sustained us. We have known great storms in our lives, but we have weathered them and have been escorted through the darkness by the sustaining breath of my Father.

In his 70’s my father adopted four children under the age of 10. Love compelled him to do so. There are those who see things that are wrong in the world and may stop for a glance to acknowledge them. And then there are those who set out to do something about it. Now in his 80’s along with the my mother he homeschools, takes care of my step-grandmother who is in her 90’s, attends Little League, Boy Scouts and collects children that are not his own. They are drawn to him. For he is compassion.

By the worlds standards and quite possibly his own, he may not be considered great. But to my heart, he is the greatest gift I have been given in the life that I have known. Every day I awake with thankfulness on my lips that he is my father. I have studied his hands so I will always remember the embrace that has held me and the strength that has caught me when I have fallen. My answering machine is jammed with phone messages of him calling just to say he loves me. I cannot bring myself to erase them away. I have watched him be broken and I have watched him heal. In all the seasons he has known he has not wavered in his faith. His motto has been “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me . . . “

I am honored to be his 3rd daughter.

For those who have not known the love of an earthly father . . . my heart hurts for you. My prayer would be . . . .that you would know the love of a Heavenly one, who is constant, faithful and calling out your name, and that for eternity it would be the greatest gift you have ever been given.

My Papa.

I am the youngest of three girls. My Dad grew up as the youngest of three boys. His whole childhood: shooting the breeze around the North Carolina woods and farmland with his two brothers, scaring my grandmother with the raccoons and other creatures brought into the house, playing every sport imaginable…and then, he married a woman. And had three baby girls with that woman.

Needless to say, this is quite the lifestyle shift for Jerry Brown. Jerry Brown, who loved loved, and still loves, his small-framed, humble, and feisty mama. Jerry Brown and his house full of women. Growing up, even our pets were all girls—never intentionally—but it did make for a good joke after we all realized it.

My dad still introduces me as “the baby”—and I love this. I do. Twenty-two, and I am still the baby. (I hope it never changes.)

Many, many mornings growing up, I would wake up and realize my father had already been up for maybe a good hour or so, spending time with the Lord. This is my favorite part about my dad. He has a heart that is tender in a flash. Ready to speak a word to someone, speak a blessing. And he is faithful. If I were to say so to him, he would look at me—and in that hushed yet determined tone of voice that I know so well—respond, “There is One who has been faithful to me. He’s the faithful One.” I cannot deny that.

My father loves my mother. This I love as well—there are moments when I see his younger heart for her creep out with a silly grin. I cannot imagine the years, the storms, the calm…the happy and the not-so-fun moments that they have walked through together…

This Father’s Day my dad emailed us three girls with a gift request for possibly the first time in his life: he would like for all of his daughters to join him for church, at my parent’s church, Sunday morning. Because, he says, “It would bless me.” Having gone our separate ways in these later years…we will all join him this Sunday. Sit next to his strong frame. His strong frame that is suddenly showing age (when we never thought it would). His strong frame that was once a boyish frame running through tobacco fields…He is now our most dependable and wise papa. The man in our lives.

He has taken care of all of us, and he is taking care of all of us. He is strong shepherd, he is basketball on Thursday nights in his high-tops, he is gentle soul.
Daddy, I love you—and I honor you on this day. Thank you for leading us to our true Father.

Redemptive Rinse, part II

They say there is always two sides to every story.

"I couldn't see him, but I knew he was there..."
Our bride reflected on the beginning of her walk to meet her groom.

Someone once told me to always look at the groom when the bride first appears.
I couldn't miss this moment, this tender couple's first meeting on their special day...a day for which they had not dreamed of rain.

I look towards the groom, his feet bare in the rain puddles...She comes nearer.
His face breaks, moved with the beauty of his bride, moved by the thought of her coming so happily to meet him in the rain.

Her white gown swished to and fro across the soaked grass
She grinned.
Confident. A little damp from her journey...
But beaming.

It was for him. It was all for him. The rain didn't matter anymore.

She neared him and his face fell full of tears, fell completely undone.

It was for them. It was all for them. And the rain didn't matter anymore.

I wonder what our Bridegroom is thinking while he stands in waiting for His Bride to trek through the rainstorm to meet Him...

Surely He is moved. So moved by our gesture of love. Ever gentle, ever strong, ever confident...He waits. And His heart is weak towards us.

Yes, I will weather this with you. Yes, I will come to meet you in this storm.

One glance of His face and we can finish the trek. And the rain just won't matter anymore.

This is something that even as I write, I want to know. I want to know and remember that even in the storm, when we can't see Him, His heart is not flippant towards us. He is moved by our walk towards Him, with Him. One glance of His face...one glance.
We emerge confident, beaming...and all in all, it will have been the perfect day.

We do weddings
We create them
We have in our own minds what is "perfect"
And for most--the outdoor wedding that has a soothing breeze and soft rays of sun...is perfect.
But is it?
What if it is the day of thunder showers, wet grass, large mud piles...and quiet smiles.
Where those you love gather in the rain and wait to see you walk up a mountain meadow to meet your groom in the gray of a wet mist.
Bridesmaids hand-in-hand forging a hill in laughter and song
Announcing the bride's coming and then...
There she is...dressed in white...so very lovely...coming through the storm to meet her groom. Wearing her innocence as a crown and radiant in love and purity.

I could not help imagine what she was thinking in that moment.
Let the winds blow and the storm rage and the drops descend
Still...I will come to you...
I will find you waiting for me in the storm and we will meet it together until it passes.

There are so many of us that seems to be facing a few storms.
Darkness is pending.
The storm clouds hovering.

I want to say...stay there in it...
Wait for your Bridegroom--speak vows to Him
And the storm will pass over
And like our sweet bride and dearest friend
You will dance in the rain and stomp in the water puddles
With your head thrown back in abandonment and laughter.

Take heart...
For those who find themselves in darkness or in the middle of a storm. You will have a resurrection in your darkness.
Wait for it!

A Mother's Day for the Heart

She used to pick them. It is the flower that most spoke of her fragrant spirit and the beauty that dwelled within her. She used to put them in a white vase and place them on the kitchen table . . . . .they always said home to me. The lilac in the language of flowers means impending farewell . . . looking back now I am glad that I did not know that she truly would say goodbye to me so early.

It is almost Mother's Day. I find that I still miss her. I find that I still look for her though she has not been with me for such a very long time. I find that I still celebrate the life that she gave me, the love that she left me and the memories that remind me of her. I stop to smell the lilacs that are in bloom and I remember the one I will never forget.

Bless Your Heart is coming into a new season . . . .in some ways I believe that we all are. We have weathered a few storms, lingered in some long silences and survived the winter. And now it is time for our souls to speak. It is Spring. And new life awaits us.

There are many changes happening within the walls of our small shop. Melissa is getting ready to give birth to her first son, who we have claimed as “Our Bless Your Heart Baby”; Sarah will be graduating from college and we are delighted to announce will be staying on at Bless Your Heart and leading us into our days. Hannah and Sumiah who faithfully work to create the day of dreams for our brides will also be graduating but remaining at the heart as Sumiah herself is getting ready to say “I do” to a happily ever after. You will see a new and fresh face by the name of Jessica who we are thrilled to welcome with open arms and hearts, and I find that I am dusting off a few dreams that I have placed on the shelf for a very long time and embracing change and a small thing called renewed hope.

For the most part we are finding that “the heart” has the capacity to weather the storms that find us, heal from those things that wound us and grow in those things that interest us. We are planting a few dreams, saying “no” to a few frequent fears and simply finding a place to stand . . . . . in the sun!

Our heart is open for a new season . . . . .and we cannot wait to find you in it.

2 brides 2 styles... our first bride is absolutely sweet and timeless, just like her wedding was. she had her ceremony at a lovely church on top of the mountain and her reception was held on a beautiful camp. she used her family silver collection as containers for centerpieces and had an antique handkerchief incorporated in her bouquet.

take a look at this outdoor wedding in blowing rock. this is the wishing tree. we hung ribbons from the branches of this wondrous tree and guests were asked to write a wish for the bride and groom and pin it to a ribbon. in lieu of traditional, chairs and an arbor, our bride used two rows of apple trees for her aisle and opted for bales of hay for seating with these sweet kissing balls to serve as the focal point for the ceremony.

they are made by a local mother daughter team with an original moravian recipe passed down within their family. i had the pleasure of taking one of these tasty treats home for dinner. my hubby and i both loved this simple supper. it is savory and delicious and did i mention the unbelievable crust? mmmmmm. it's making my mouth water just thinking about it. anyway, come by our shop and pick yourself up a quick meal with easy clean up that's sure to be a family favorite. cost is $19.95, serves 4-6.

i am the official blogger for the heart. hopefully you will get to hear from everyone on our team at some point. anyway, i will be posting regularly on the heart blog. i work in the gift shop and assist with the flowers for weddings. with that said, the posts i publish will be will give you the inside scoop of each wedding, event, new product at the shop, etc...
